Record number of electric cars on the road

More than 2,000 battery electric vehicles were added in Slovakia during the first quarter.

The Slovak Electromobility Association (SEVA) informs that as of 31 March 2025, 17 430 battery electric vehicles of categories M1 (passenger vehicles) and N1 (light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes) were driving on Slovak roads. In the first three months of the year, 2,000 new EVs were added, of which 830 were new sales through official dealers. The remainder were covered by individual imports.

“As expected, the number of newly registered EVs continues to increase, which is a positive signal for the entire transport transformation,” says SEVA Director Patrik Križanský. However, the market dynamics reveal a paradox: most of the growth continues to be driven by individual imports of used or new vehicles from abroad, not new sales. This trend is also exceptional in a pan-European context, where new vehicle sales usually dominate. “Even in 2025, we see a paradoxical trend where imports dominate over new vehicle sales in the young battery market,” explains SEVA analyst Martin Jelenek. Although registration statistics are not as detailed as in the past, they show a clear breakthrough in the perception of electromobility by the Slovak consumer, despite the absence of a long-term support or subsidy programme.

Tesla and Skoda in the lead

The largest number of registered battery electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2025 belonged to the Tesla brand, which reached 471 registrations. In the new sales segment, the Skoda brand was a strong performer, doubling the number of battery cars sold year-on-year. “Tesla maintains a strong position in Slovakia despite the turbulence in other European markets, despite the absence of an official representation, while Skoda significantly strengthened its year-on-year performance in EV sales. This is the result of an expanded range of more affordable models from this traditional manufacturer,” adds Martin Jelenek.

Adoption of electro-mobility is growing, but we are still lagging behind the EU average

In March 2025, the adoption of battery electric vehicles in Slovakia reached a record high of 4.7% of all new registrations. By comparison, the European Union average for the same period was 15.3%. “However, despite the positive trend, Slovakia is still among the weakest countries in Europe in terms of sales of new battery electric vehicles,” comments Patrik Križanský. SEVA expects 2025 to be a key year for the further expansion of electromobility in Slovakia. Automakers have already brought or will bring to market a number of new EV models in the price range of €20,000 to €30,000, which will significantly improve the affordability of vehicles for both ordinary customers and corporate fleets. “Affordability and a wider choice of models will be key factors in accelerating EV sales,” predicts Patrik Križanský, adding: “Based on current developments at SEVA, we expect to cross the 20,000 registered EVs threshold in Slovakia within the next few months.” An important impetus for the development of electro-mobility in Europe is also the continuing decline in battery prices and increased pressure from manufacturers to reduce vehicle emissions in the context of new emission standards.
