V4 at a crossroads: how to move away from combustion cars and not lose competitiveness

Challenges of automotive industry transformation in the V4 countries

The Slovak Electromobility Association (SEVA) in cooperation with the Czech E-mobility Platform and the Polish New Mobility Association (PSNM) has prepared an analytical paper “Shifting gears: Visegrad ICE dependency and the road to electromobility”, which identifies key risks and opportunities for transport transformation in the Visegrad Four (V4) countries.

The publication shows that Central Europe is particularly strongly tied to the automotive industry – both economically and consumer-wise – while at the same time facing the consequences of the long-standing “diesel/petrol leakage”, i.e. massive imports of older internal combustion cars from Western Europe. This is slowing fleet renewal and widening the gap in clean mobility between the West and our region.

The analysis identifies the barriers that are most hindering the faster uptake of EVs today: availability and driver experience with EVs, market pricing, as well as practical operational issues – charging infrastructure, ease of use and consumer confidence. Another important message is the need for clear and factual communication that explains the reasons for the transformation, works with data and removes myths, rather than ‘dictating’ change.

The publication was produced as a partnership output in the framework of regional cooperation and is part of a broader discussion on how the V4 countries should strengthen their competitiveness in the era of batteries, software, charging and smart grids – and how to minimise risks to jobs and export markets in the process.
