Under demanding conditions, the electric range drops significantly, and the car relies more on the internal combustion engine. More dynamic driving, low temperatures, and running the heater increase energy consumption as well as CO2 emissions and other pollutants. Research also confirms that if a plug-in hybrid owner does not charge the vehicle regularly, it effectively becomes a heavier gasoline-powered car.
